TREKKING

MONTE THABOR.

This route, which has now become a classic and every summer attracts hundreds of tourists, follows an easy path but one that is quite tiring in the final stretch due to the altitude you reach (3178 m).
You set off from the 3rd Alpine soldier Refuge in Valle Stretta. The unsurfaced road goes up steadily to Piano della Fonderia (1911 m) where it is worth stopping at the base of a spectacular water fall. Then you turn left following the signs for Maison des Chamois, an alpine holiday camp located in the shelter of a ravine from which the water fall just seen originates. Just before reaching the building you turn left following the red and white markings. You head in the direction of a hill and then take a well marked path through the meadows, until you reach Ponte delle Planche at an altitude of 2204 metres. Crossing the bridge the path goes up steeply towards the North West leaving on your right the imposing rocky mass of the Piccolo and Grande Séru.
Between steep stretches and short intervals on the flat, the track reaches the Colle delle Muande (2727 m) where you face the last detrital ramp that leads to the summit. A few metres lower down you find the chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows. Erected in the eleventh century, it was rebuilt in 1648. Every year, on 16th July, the monument is the site of a pilgrimage in fulfilment of a vow made in 1860 by the inhabitants of Melezet struck by an epidemic of typhoid. From the summit of Monte Thabor the panorama across the Maritime Alps is wonderful: you can also see the highest peaks of the Delfinato and – very clearly - Mont Blanc. An unforgettable sight.
