The highest town in Europe
Few know it but Briançon is the highest town in Europe. From its 1326 metres it dominates a natural scenario of rare beauty.
It can be easily reached from the Bokki: in summer you take the Colle della Scala and the trip does not take much longer than half an hour by car. In winter it is necessary to go toward the Montgenèvre Pass and the time taken doubles. But it is worth it in any season.
Briançon is known for its fortifications designed by Vauban in the seventeenth century. With its walls, gates, fort and eaves this town is a military architectural jewel surrounded by a multitude of strongholds planted on the highest peaks of the zone.
Then what it offers to mountain lovers is without doubt astonishing. In the spring period you can go trekking, climbing, ski mountaineering and off-piste skiing. That’s without mentioning the numerous sports that can be practised; just two among many- paragliding and canyoning.
The small picturesque streets pass between ancient walls and colourful houses. The visit may culminate with a gastronomic call at one of the many small restaurants of the old town. Or at the bottom of the main street which slopes steeply toward a breathtaking panoramic terrace.
